We’ve been joined today by one of our incredible Product Designers Kath, who tells us all about how she began her creative journey and what she does to support the Sizzix product range.
What do you do?
I’m a product and 3D Designer and my day to day tasks mainly consist of designing and modelling our 3D Embossing folders – taking them all the way from concept to manufacture and release to customers.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
My favourite part of my job is 3D Modelling. I can get lost for hours drawing all the small & intricate parts to our folders.
How did you get into crafting?
When I was a very small child, you would usually find me with a pack of A4 paper and a roll of Sellotape. I was always making paper models of things. As I grew older I turned to cardmaking which is still a favourite past time but my real push into the creative world came when I was in high school at my Design & Technology classes where my love for product design really began. I went on to study Product Design at university and after graduation I landed my first job as a Product Designer designing playground equipment until I found Sizzix where I could combine my hobby and career into one.
What is your favourite making type and why? Is there a make you’ve made that you’re really proud of?
I like to try my hand at everything, but I would say cardmaking is my favourite, in particular Christmas cards. I get such a nostalgic feeling every year when I sit down to make that year’s cards as Christmas cardmaking is something I have done since I was very young.
What is your favourite product from the Sizzix product range and why?
My favourite is a small but essential addition to any craft room! Adhesive Sheets! They are a life saver when making with intricate die cuts, no more excess glue getting everywhere!
What’s your favourite current making trend?
My favourite current making trend has to be upcycling. Having recently bought my first home I am always on the look out for old pieces of furniture I can make new to fit in our home, the latest being a very old and rusty garden bench swing. I can’t wait to breathe some new life into it.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everyday life! I find sometimes you can find inspiration and ideas in the strangest of places and where you least expect them.
What’s your favourite die design you’ve created so far and why?
I don’t have many die designs to my name but to pick one it would have to be 663856 – Great Outdoors as it was one of my very first die designs so it holds a special place. For embossing though it’s hard to choose but at the moment it would have to be 665760 – Halloween Elements, the detail and the levels I managed to achieve in the folder I am super proud of and I personally think each individual element is pretty cute too!
